Am I Ready to Go Back to School? Ask Yourself These 5 Soulful Questions First

March 24, 20263 min read

For many moms in midlife, the thought of going back to school stirs up a swirl of emotions:
Excitement. Nerves. Doubt. Hope.

Maybe you’re wondering:
• Am I too old to start over?
• Will I have the time or energy to keep up?
• What if I fail?

This is important:
You don’t have to have it all figured out to take the next step.

Sometimes all you need is a quiet pause—and a few honest questions asked with love instead of pressure.

1. What’s Calling Me Back to School?

Start here. What’s stirring inside you?

Is it a dream you pressed pause on to raise your family?
A desire for more purpose or career options?
Or maybe… it’s just time.

Why this matters: Your “why” becomes your compass. It will guide you when things feel hard or unclear.

Your reason doesn’t have to be profound or perfect. It just has to be yours.

2. What Fears Are Holding Me Back, and Which Ones Are Just Noise?

Fear of failure.
Fear of being the oldest in the room.
Fear of juggling it all—home, work, school, and you.

(I’ve had every single one of these.)

Here’s the truth:
These fears don’t mean you’re not ready. They mean you’re human, and that you care deeply.

Courage doesn’t mean fear goes away. It means you keep going, with fear riding quietly in the back seat.

3. What Support Do I Already Have, or Could I Ask For?

You are not meant to do this alone.

Who can help with the kids while you study?
Who will remind you, “You’ve got this”?
Who’s in your corner, cheering you on?

Why this matters: Support—emotional, practical, spiritual—makes the journey lighter and more sustainable.

If your circle is small (or non-existent), don’t worry. You can grow one. I did, and I’m the worst when it comes to asking for help.

4. How Am I Already Showing Up for Myself, Even in Small Ways?

You might be more ready than you realize.

Have you looked up programs?
Talked with a friend?
Pinned a degree on your vision board?
Even reading this post is a sign that you’re closer to YES than you realize.

5. What Would I Tell My Daughter (or Best Friend) in This Same Situation?

We’re quick to cheer on the people we love.
You’d tell her:
"You’re brave."
"You can do this."
"I believe in you."

So… what would happen if you said the same thing to yourself?

You deserve the same compassion, belief, and permission you give to others.

Still Not Sure? That’s Okay. “Maybe” Is a Valid Beginning.

You don’t need a five-year plan. You just need a spark.
✨ A feeling. A whisper. A nudge.

You can:
• Gather info
• Reflect on your why
• Take one next step

Because going back to school isn’t just about enrollment.
It’s about becoming the woman you’ve always wanted to be.

Your future self is already smiling.
And I’m cheering you on every step of the way.
