The Hard Truth About Being a College Mom and What I Wish I Knew Sooner

Have you ever tried to chase a dream while holding everyone else’s life together?

When I finally decided to pursue my college dreams, that’s exactly how it felt. I believed I could do it all—take care of the home, work part-time, raise the kids, be a loving wife and daughter, and somehow be a great student too.

But here’s the hard truth: the traditional college journey wasn’t designed for moms. Success is measured by metrics such as retention and persistence, rather than how well we navigate the balancing act of family, work, and school.

The college mom’s journey is different. It’s powered by purpose, grounded in a family-first vision, and shaped by the woman you’re becoming, not just a GPA or credit count.

When I first returned to school, I chose a major I hated because I thought it would lead to a dream job. I pushed for a 4.0 GPA and beat myself up when I fell short. I rushed through bedtime stories and after-school chats because I had assignments due. I tried to succeed in a system built for 18-year-olds, not for women like me.

And what did I learn?

  • My marriage nearly fell apart.

  • I burned out to the point I could barely function.

  • And while others saw me as “high achieving,” I felt like a failure inside.

Then everything changed.

My dad was diagnosed with terminal cancer. That loss shook me to my core. I realized none of it mattered if I couldn’t be present to enjoy the people I loved and the life I was working so hard to build.

I took a year off to be with him, to rest, to heal. He passed away. My marriage began to mend. And in that pause, I grew more than I ever had in any classroom.

When I returned, I came back with a new purpose. I changed my major. I moved into higher education. And I made a promise: to help other adult learners, especially moms, find a better way. A way that begins with grace.

I can’t rewrite my journey, but I’m grateful for how it shaped me.

Over the past 25 years, I’ve helped thousands of adult learners reach their college goals, not through hustle and burnout, but through confidence, clarity, and calm.

If you’re a mom dreaming of college, know this:

You can do it. And you don’t have to do it like everyone else.

Start by centering yourself—your purpose, your dreams, your why. Because you’re not behind. You’re right on time.

Create the life you want, with grace, and watch your success bloom.
